Shiver Me Timbers - Newton Students Discover Treasure in Writing!
Newton School fifth graders have worked over the last few weeks in a writing emphasis that has given the students much to think about when writing. Fifth grade teachers Debbi Phillips, Missy Busby, Tricia Miller, and Ashley McPhillips have set the stage with costumes and writing prompts with the pirate theme.
Students have reexamined writing modes including expository, descriptive, and narrative writing modes. To better prepare for successful writing, students have organized their thoughts on a graphic organizer including the main idea along with supporting details. Students focused on using words that express appropriately the feelings they want from the reader.
Students' writings were posted on a giant display including islands for each of the modes. Using the state rubrics for good writing, students evaluated the stories which helped them gain a deeper understanding of expectations. The fifth graders then cast their votes and selected the captains of the Expository, Descriptive, and Narrative Islands. Selected as Captains were Virginia Green - Captain of Descriptive Island, Lauren Fendley - Captain of Narrative Island, and Chancellor Childress - Captain of Expository Island.
