Newton Sixth Graders Collaborate during Learning
Monday, November 02, 2009

Alan Burnie, from the Auburn University Horticulture Department, speaks to Newton School 6th graders about Horticulture topics including planting and caring for fruit tree varieties that grow best in our Coastal environment.  Students were allowed to ask questions after the presentation and then everyone went outside and helped plant a variety of fruit bearing trees on the school campus as part of their earth science curriculum.  The trees planted included Satsuma, Pecan, Peach, and Pomegranate donated by the Gulf Coast Experiment Station.  Students will be studying how microclimates affect tree growth as well as how to care for the plants throughout the year.  The project involved the community, Assistant Principal Hendon Brunson, and the whole 6th grade including teacher Vanessa Pate.
